Skype Alternatives?

When I have video conversations on Skype, both the classic version and the newly released one, it brings my Mac to a crawl using around 75% of the CPU after a bit. Is there any alternative to Skype or a barebones version? I prefer Skype over FaceTime on the Mac.

have you tried tried Skype via the web rather than the app?

you can log in and use Skype via the Skype site without the app.

not sure if would help with ur problem or not as the app is fine in my high Sierra MacBook Air.

My mother, daughter, and I use Google Hangouts. Not perfect, but it works for our weekly chats.
