Skype- can only hear voicemail through headset

Hi, I have the weirdest issue with Skype. I can send/receive calls on my iPhone 3GS (unjailbroken, f/w 3.1) through Skype and hear just fine through the normal speaker at the top of the phone. For some reason though, when checking my Skype voicemail, I can't hear it through the speaker- I have to plug the white in-line headset into my phone to hear them. Is it supposed to be that way? Can I get around it? Having to carry those headphones around just to check voicemail is flat out idiotic.
