As probably a lot of you have been aware that skype now is the crappy. Is there a hack where I can take out the bloatedness and fix the UI or is there a skype alternative for Mac and Windows that addresses the above issues? I need voice and video chat.

I am not sure actually. I have tried an older version but it messed up the video call. I didn't go too many versions back though.
Thanks for the link trying out 2.8 now.
Edit: Works great! 2.8 until skype fixes its act.
