To me skype is pointless for the iPhone, in order to receive calls I must be signed in and have the app OPEN. So in order to receive a call via skype the caller must either phone me or send an email, which makes skype unnecessary.

Will the new iPhone 3.0 allow background processes for programs such as skype?

No, but if Skype updates their App it might be able to send you a notification of someone trying to call you.

True the lack of background processing is a major weakness of iphone. I guess you can always have the person call you on the iphone, then call them back using skype...

But that makes skype superfluous, whats the point in calling me (which costs depending on phone plan) when the whole point in skype is to make free calls.

You can make a 1 minute call to the other person to sign on, then call them on skype and speak for hours. What point cant you see.

Okay. It's pointless in you're opinion. You can carry on complaining whilst the rest of us enjoy the app.

You can use that argument of yours for almost anything on the iPhone, including mail, IM apps, etc. But it's only just come out, and 3.0s so called 'Push' is around the corner. Wait and see, we might be surprised.

My only problem is that there's no 3G calling. I'd say that's down to the good old phone companies, not wanting us to get the most out of our unlimited data.

It runs in the background on WinMo phones... Thus it notifies you when you receive a call.

How is it handled when you get a normal cell phone call while one a skype call? Do you get a call waiting beep? Does it ring full volume?

And vice versa, how is handled when you get a skype call during a normal call?

I did notice that the Chat has (1) while in the Skype app. It also shows up at my Home Screen.....

I read that it does work over 3g as long as you are using 3.0 firmware.

I agree that using Skype to call phone to phone is kinda pointless - saves minutes, I guess. Calling Skype to computer (or vice versa) has its uses, but I think one big point is largely being missed here: if you have a Skype account and SkypeOut credit, you can use Skype on your iPhone to call regular phones anywhere in the world for pennies a minute (depending on the country). Not that most people do a lot of international calling, but when you need it, it works great.
