I just installed skype and in the activity monitor its indicated as taking 158mb of RAM. and 26 threads. Is this a kind of a software that should be avoided or is this normal?

It's normal. There's no need to worry about memory unless you have page outs. Mac OS X will manage memory automatically, without user involvement.

It sounds like you are using Skype 5. Skype 2.8 uses around 40MB of ram and is the preferred version by many mac users due to its' more functional interface.
