I am helping someone get setup with a new Mac as an upgrade to an old iMac. They wanted to be able to take it out of their office, and so I suggested a MacBook along with an external display and webcam for when they are using it inside their office so they could still have the benefits of a larger screen.

The MacBook is plugged into an Alogic hub, which connects to the monitor, webcam, mouse, and passthrough power for charging.

Everything with this setup is working well except for Skype. Whenever the webcam is plugged in or unplugged, either through the hub or directly, Skype will freeze and require it to be quit and reopened. This is the case whether there is a call in progress or not. When it is plugged in, and Skype has been restarted, calls work normally and video/audio comes through from the external webcam.

This issue is making it difficult for the person who is using the MacBook, as they are not very tech-savvy, and so having to remember to quit Skype before or after plugging in or unplugging to the hub at their desk is an ask. We thought they could just quit Skype after every call, but having Skype closed completely seems to mean that they do not receive any incoming calls, which is not ideal.

I am trying to make this setup as easy as possible for them and am wondering if anyone here has experienced this issue and/or had any suggestions that might fix the issue or help us work around it. They use Skype for appointments with clients, and so it is quite important that I find some solution for them, that is as easy as possible to implement.

The MacBook is an M2 Air and the webcam is a Logitech StreamCam.

Thanks in advance.
