Microsoft today announced that it has added call recording functionality to the latest version of Skype available on Mac and iOS.

Skype says that the new call recording feature is cloud-based, with Skype informing every participant in a given call that a call is being recorded.

Call recording for video chats includes everyone's video and screens that are shared during the call, with the call available to be saved and shared for the next 30 days. There is no way to record the audio portion of a video chat without also recording the video.

On both mobile and desktop, call recording can be initiated by clicking or tapping on the "+" icon at the bottom of the screen and then selecting "Start recording." Once call recording has been initiated, participants will see a mobile banner letting them know that a recording is in progress.

Call recording is available in the current version of Skype, which can be downloaded from the Skype website on the Mac or the App Store on iOS. [Direct Link]

Presumably Microsoft did their research and determined the most disgusting GUI for this new feature and then went ahead and made it twice as bad just because they could. They have turned Skype into a usability disaster zone.

Given the news of the day, call recording seems to be a pretty in-demand thing. However, I fail to see how this feature will be useful for anything beyond call center audio. Who wants to be recorded on a video call, for business OR personal purposes?

Or you can just do what I do when I need to record Skype: open QuickTime and create a screen or audio recording.

If a Skype convo is for work, I will often record it. Not all recording is nefarious...

I'm guessing this will be grandma and grandpa recording their grandkids. Or porn. Probably porn.

True.
Or, if you need a bit more power/control...

If you just need the audio, a lot of podcasters use Ecamm's Call Recorder for Skype, or I'd imagine Rogue Amoeba's utilities would work great.

Or, for video/audio, you could use ScreenFlow or Camtasia. I'd rather do my own recordings anyway rather than trust Microsoft's cloud.

Well, it has some business potential. Let’s say you’re in a call with a client to gather some requirements for a new project - it is good to have this kind of conversation recorded so you can go back to it if necessary. Or you’re doing a training / presentation over a conference call - you can record whole session for people who couldn’t attend or might want to watch it again later.

Skype has become one of the most difficult to use apps I have ever encountered.

Podcasters, for a start.

I'll often have software demos delivered over Skype. It's always useful to have these recorded to share with colleagues or double check features when doing a later review.

I gets reminded once in a while that I need to do a short call....
I have even forget why o_O

Think it had something to do with the account, but I wonder, do I even get those reminders since Microsoft took over?
Recording can be good though.

Yeah, I think I got one of those reminders (to keep the funds from expiring, or going inactive, or whatever) not too long ago... certainly since Microsoft took over.

You’re right in both ways. I checked, I had made a so short call I’d forgot, quite recently.
Think those reminders came like every 3 month or so. See if Microsoft continue with it.
I can live with it. Good to have at times.

Yeah, though I think Microsoft has owned Skype for at least a year, maybe two or more. They are just starting to do big changes, which is what is upsetting people. They clearly don't know what they are doing in terms of user-interface, but I also fear they have mucked with the foundation (which was once pretty good).
