SL: hdd problems? Sluggish OS

I was fine under 10.5, but from last month (after installing 10.6 SL upgrade), my iMac 2.4ghz core2duo is unusable. Something the HDD activity is so high that videos (on VLC) stop or freeze while playing and even safari freezes.

Sadly, the high performance update Apple released is not compatible with my late 07 iMac model.

Anyone with the same problem?

Many people have been reporting the same problem. Either go back to Leopard and wait for 10.6.4, or stay on Snow Leopard, and pray it is fixed soon when 10.6.2 eventually comes out.
