In Leopard, when I received large attachments and was connected via weak wi-fi, mail.app would ask if I wanted to download them (when I clicked the attachment or tried to drag it to the desktop) but gave me no feedback as to when it was done.
In SL, I noticed that at the bottom of the mail message I had iPhone style "dotted line boxes" with download arrows in them. When I click them, the download starts, and I can tell when they finish because the box is replaced by the icon for the file.
