I'm using an external monitor and my MacBook will only go to sleep if I select sleep from the menu.
If I lock the screen instead, the display turns off within 5-10 seconds but I can hear the MacBook is still on compared to when its actually in sleep mode and silent. I've given it 30-60 minutes a few times now but it's remained on.

Yeah this happens and I'm not sure if there is a way to bypass it.

Usually I just sleep it instead of locking it.

Oh right, but then when I just leave the computer for 10 minutes and don't lock it it does go to sleep or at least I think it does 🤔
