Now that Mojave has improved its compatibility and management of the Radeon VII in 10.14.5 I am planning to add the VII to my Mac Pro 5,1 by installing a second PSU in the optical drive area to cover the card’s high wattage demand. How does such an Aux PSU and its connection to the GPU handle Sleep?
I will probably use the strategies outlined in the mods by Dr. Stealth and HappyMac314. Here the Aux PSU is slaved to the main PSU by taking its 120AC power directly from the main PSU’s circuit board. This should ensure that the Aux PSU will turn on and off following the status of the main PSU. But in sleep what happens? Are the main power circuits totally off during Sleep and thus the Aux PSU and its connected GPU also off? Should I expect a normal Sleep function for the Mac or will it be problematic?
The second basic way of using an Aux PSU seems to be to just plug it in to an external circuit and control its on and off through the “Paperclip Trick.” This would not turn the Aux PSU on and off automatically but would require playing with the clip or adding another switch or a relay on the Green/Black jumper. From what I read this way seems not to work very well with Sleep.
What are your experiences? Do the built-in protections of a good Aux PSU such as Over Voltage Protection, Over Current Protection, and Short Circuit Protection effect Sleep?
