If you can think to yourself the sound a plattered hard drive makes when it parks it heads (that chink sound), you can understand the following.

Most of the time when my rMBP goes to sleep, it makes that noise once. It seriously sounds like it is parking it heads. But knowing the rMBP does not have any moving parts other than the fans, I wonder if they have brakes and will kill themselves that loudly?

The fans don't have brakes, so they shouldn't be making any sound, other than slowly spinning down. That's strange, as there is no other moving part that should make such a sound.

I have the exact same problem and have been trying to make a recording of it. the sound seems to come from the area to the right side of the track pad.
