Looking at the historic Sleep Scores that have appeared on my phone, my Sleep for virtually every night over the last six months has been Excellent or High (I think I've had one 'OK'). I like to get about 7.5 hours sleep a night, and I find it odd that e.g. on a night when I only got 6.5 hours, I can still get a score of 90/100 with only nine points penalty (41/50) for the shorter sleep. I can't tell from the algorithm, but it seems to be using a much greater range than I would expect and in order to get a very low rating for Duration I would need to sleep only 2-3 hours. On the same night I went to bed 10 mins earlier than normal so got 30/30 on 'Bedtime' and 3 wake-ups totalling 7m so that got me 19/20 for 'Interruptions'. But I know when I woke up I didn't feel like I had an Excellent night.

By contrast, for the same night Gentler Streak assessed my sleep quality as Fair and Withings gave it a score of 64/100.

I know that the whole process of allocating a number to assess something which is qualitative is arbitrary, but I can't say that I find a rating system where the vast majority of my scores are in the 90s even when I don't feel I've had a good night is particularly useful.

What are other people seeing?

The scores feel too high for me.

There are a few difficult nights over the past month, where I've woken feeling terrible, that are scoring a minimum of Ok. I'm getting most of my reasonable, restful nights classed as Excellent. I scored a 99 one night somehow, despite stresses in my life at the moment.

I would like sleep score to take more things into consideration in future versions. Things like resting heartbeat, ability to achieve deeper sleep, and oxygen levels.

In the meantime, RISE feels more realistic to me as I work to improve my sleep.

I slept early, got 10 hours of sleep, and had about 14 interruptions. I still got a sleep score of "85." Yesterday, I slept at 1 AM, got 7 hours of sleep, and had fewer interruptions, but it got a sleep score of "91." It feels broken.

That sounds reasonable to me.

Ideal sleep is 6-8 hours with as few interruptions as possible, so your 7 hour night was technically better for overall sleep long term.

There's no objective/standardized sleep score AFAIK, so every OEM/app could be using a completely different methodology. Comparing scores across different sources is an exercise in futility unless you know they use the exact same criteria and weight them the exact same way, while being collected from the exact same hardware.

It will be interesting to compare my Apple Health Sleep Scores to the ones in the Withings app. Withings basically hates my sleep - last month my average sleep score was 61 and they've been in the mid 50s - low 60s this entire year. I go to bed at different times (usually very late), usually sleep 5-7 hours, and am up at least 1-2 times during the night. According to the Withings app, the factors they take into consideration are duration, heart rate, HRV, sleep depth, regularity, and number of interruptions. Duration holds the highest weight among all the factors. They also mention and chart respiratory rate, but it's not listed as one of the factors for scoring.

After showing my dr the Apnea results on my watch back in January I now use a Resmed CPAP machine and the MyAir app that it pairs with. The applewatch sleep score and the MyAir daily grade have been within a few points of each other. MyAir being a bit higher or lower depending on the mask seal score that the watch doesn't take into account.
