I could not find this anywhere, don't kill me.

I run my backup script at midnight everynight, which requires that my machine is left on...all the time.

Is there a way to write an Applescript to sleep the machine at 1 a.m.?

No need for a script:

go into apple menu

system preferences :

energy saver

at the bottom of the screen it say's schedule

click that and set sleep/wake

And to think...I was clueless about this feature!

:) haha, well there's always something we don't know. I didn't know about tabs in safari for.... an entire year  when I read about it on MR.

Thanks again - I set my backup to run at midnight every day and an hour later the machine sleeps.

Sweet. :D
