Sleep

IIs there a way to invoke Sleep without using Apple Menu? I mean as in a one key command or possibly a Hot Spot. Tried the Hot Spot but guess I really don"t understand the process. Other than iPads (all 3) this is my first Mac (a 21.5 iMac) so please be gentle with me!
