I was just curious if it can be bad to let my MBP go to sleep and waking it about 10-12 times a day by closing the lid and opening. I work on and off on it and sometimes will close the lid and reopen in the 15 minutes, or go 30 mins, or 1 hour...but I was concerned because I hear that little noise of the hard drive waking up every time I open the lid. Would it be better to just leave it plugged in and awake with caffeine? Wouldn't this shorten the screen's life?

It should be fine.

My advice; be careful, but worry less. Use your computer as much as possible. Don't use it as a frisbee or a door-stop. The notebook will eventually either break down or become obsolete. Maybe sleeping it 10-12 times a day will shorten its lifespan a bit, but maybe not. But the alternative is what? Not closing the lid? Then you are more likely to drop it or smack it into something.
