Slideshow controls missing in Mail.app

This morning I opened an email in Mall.app with several pictures and hit the slideshow button and when the slideshow opened, I had no controls, the control bar seems to be missing. I can't move ahead or back or pause or more importantly, add photos to iPhoto. Any one have any idea WHY that might be happening?

Luckily I found a post here which reminded me of the Opt-Click on the Save As button to add photos to iPhoto, but I want to figure this out.

Any ideas?
