I've been thinking about the rumored 16" MacBook Pro which is supposed to be roughly the same size as the current 15" MacBook Pro but have slimmer bezels to account for the increased screen size.

Does it make sense for Apple to introduce MacBook Pros with slimmer bezels while still selling models with current-sized bezels? It doesn't seem as if the world is clamoring for such a product. It also would likely disrupt the disciplined quality of Apple's product lines. This is, of course, exactly what they're doing with the iPad (the iPad has a thick bezel and the iPad Pro has a thin one). But with iPads, the products are more noticeably different.

It seems to me that Apple would want to introduce its next generation of MacBook Pros by announcing a suite of improvements that included the thinner bezels.

Apple will do whatever makes sense to them... and no one here can accurately answer your question.

The last reported rumor was that the 16" would replace the 15", unlike the earlier rumors that said the two would coexist.

Assuming similar machine sizes, it would seem odd to keep the 15", unless the 16" also had some other premium (and expensive) features, as you suggest. It seems to me if it has the same processor as the 15" as reported, it likely is just a "routine" upgrade, not a generational-redesign.
