The time it takes for my machine to turn on, and even turn off, is atrocious.

It'll take the computer 4 minutes alone to confirm that my password is correct, 2 minutes to fade to black from my desktop during a shut down, and up to 5 minutes to even get from my desktop from the point of pressing my power button.

What can I do?

Find the system install disk that came with your computer, use it as a startup disk, and run the Hardware Test in the Utilities drop down menu. Also, go to Disk Utility, and run both the disk check, and the disk permissions check.
