Slow 3G when next to someone

I've been meaning to ask this question for quite some time now and the answer may very well be its just all in my head but sometimes when I'm sitting next to someone (family or friends) and we're both using our iPhones, the 3G speed slows down. We can both have 5 bars of full service on 3G. I'm probably just over thinking it but was just wondering if the phones affect one another in any way.
