Slow AirPort Extreme USB disk response

I have an AirPort Extreme and Western Digital My Book Mirror 2TB USB Drive attached for Time Machine backups and data storage. I routinely access my MoneyWell Financial Program file located on one of the drive partitions. The drive seems to power down often, even when I’m in the middle of using MoneyWell. Also when using Finder just to access the drive the computer sometimes hangs.

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this issue?
