slow back up

I have a 17" macbook pro running 2.8 GHZ Core 2 Duo. OS 10.10.5 I have a OWC 1 TB Buffalo external drive which I previously backed up to a 2nd identical Buffalo drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. It has been a few months since I backed up this 2nd drive so I am doing it again to keep up to date. Both drives are plugged directly in to USB ports on the macbook pro. The problem is only 29.04 GB out of 713.6 GB have copied in 8 hours. At this rate I'll be dead by the time back up is finished. Any hope for living long enough to see it through?

Use USB 2 speeds will explain the reason for it being slow.
