Hi! Just got my mom a new iPhone 14. She loves it after having an SE 2020.

I set it up today, transferring directly from her SE, just a few hours ago.

Thing is, it’s charging very slowly. Much slower than her SE. Now, we’re using the old 5W brick because we don’t have the 20W brick that is compatible with the included cable. I, myself, use an old 5W brick with my iPhone 14 Pro because I charge it overnight and don’t need anything fast. But my Pro charges faster than her old SE.

So what could be causing this? Phone isn’t working properly? Or maybe it’s still indexing since it was just recently set up?

I’ve personally never experienced this with new phones.

Any ideas?

iPhone 14 battery capacity is nearly double of SE when both are new. The SE likely has an aged battery with reduced capacity. It should be much slower.

Not completely sure I understand. Are you saying the SE should be charging more slowly? Because as of right now, the 14 is charging more slowly than the SE.

The 14 should be much slower than SE. This is because the 14 battery can hold a lot more charge. Therefore, it takes longer to fill up. It's like filling the gas tank of a truck (14) vs. car (SE).

If it's taking a lot longer, like more than 3 times as long as the SE to charge, then the cable may be damaged.

Gotcha. We‘ll keep an eye on it. It truly is a shame they don’t put the brick in the box anymore. Or offer the choice between USB-A lightening cable and USB-C lightening cable in the box.

This isn't clear, does Mom have a new 14 or a new SE?

Regardless, I'd try fully charging and rebooting the new phone, and then charging using a 20W or greater charger with a USB-C to Lightning cable or a MagSafe adapter.

That 5w charger is going to take a LONG time to charge that device. If charge time is your worry, it's worth splurging on a faster charger. https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Charger-Foldable-iPhone-Included/dp/B0B2MM1W65/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2QORU9YX8L4B5&keywords=anker+usb+c+charger&qid=1678412950&sprefix=anker+usb+c+char,aps,233&sr=8-4 or something like this. You can use the included USB C to Lightning cable with this and it'll charge the phone super fast.

Sounds about right. I recently got a 14 Pro and first few days it was chugging along super hot at full CPU power getting all my data and setting up apps. The phone even halted charging till temperatures came down.

I think you misquoted my post. Her 2020 SE has been replaced by an iPhone 14. The 14 is charging slowly.

I understand the sentiment behind getting the 20W brick, but I personally prefer the 5W for my 14 Pro. It charges plenty fast overnight.

We’ll see what happens over the next few days. Her old 5W brick or old cable could be the culprit.

Its because the battery is bigger on the 14 plus rather than the SE.

That is why it is charging much slower.

Why did no one mention the new "Clean Energy Charging" feature? I remember being confused about my 14 Pro charging slowly a few weeks ago, but then remembered that Apple had added the feature. Check if it's on in Settings -> Battery -> "Clean Energy Charging"

Thanks! I didn’t know this existed. It’s set to on on my 14 Pro. I’ll have to check my mom’s 14 when I see her again.

Does your phone charge more slowly when this feature is on?
