slow file actions

I've got a 2 Ghz iMac G5 with 1.5 GB of RAM running 10.5.6, and any action involving files seems to be really slow. Things like displaying the contents of a folder and creating and deleting folders can take 5-10 seconds. I ran First Aid in Disk Utility and my hard drive seems to be fine. Does anyone have any ideas about what the issue might be?
