Over the last few weeks the speed at which files transfer from my iMac to my external firewire drive seems to have slowed down. It takes about 2 minutes per GB. Can anyone suggest a way of increasing the speed at which they transfer.
The external drive is only half full and connected by Firewire 400

Just curious have you/can you transfer files using the USB?
My USB 2 transfers about a Gig/min. That would give an idea if its the external or problems with your FW connection.

disk optimizations utilities

my guess would be your hard drive instead of usb or firewire. your disks may just be getting a bit messy at the directory level... try running disk warrior, drive genius, or something similar; they should get your hard drive speeds back to normal.

Thanks for the ideas. I don't have any 3rd party software for checking / fixing my drives. I have run Disk Utilities, and they say the disks are OK. The drive is Firewire only so I can't check it against USB.
