slow Final Cut

I have been experiencing slow Final Cut performance and playback, and similar problems with Adobe Premier. Playback is super choppy, like 2 frames a second at best. I typically run off 500 GB FW800 G-Drive. I also moved my scratch location to my location to my local drive as a test, but had the same result. I am basically a self taught novice, so maybe there is something obvious I am missing. I sure hope my computer isn't giving up the ghost. Could it be a faulty Graphics card? My mac specs follow:

MacBookPro 3,1
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GH
4 GB RAM
150 GB hard drive, 30 GB free
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT Graphics Card
128 MB VRAM
