Suddenly, out of the blue, my firewire HDD will perform very poorly. If I reboot or unplug the HDD or something, it'll go back up.

Any ideas?
 
Might be dying. Backup data while you can.

For all external drives, after you eject, you should allow somewhere around 5-10 seconds for the drive to spin down before using the power switch to turn it off. Doing that reduces problems.
