Slow FTP download speeds

I have an okay connection, I can get up to 1MB/s download.

On my Windows laptop, I can download from a certain FTP server at 600kb/s or higher, but on my mac I can't download from the same server with more than 50kb/s, regardless of client. If I use multiple FTP clients, I can get 50kb/s per client, but I just can't get one client to work at full speed. Help?
