I recently purchased a iMac 2.0 GHZ 20" w/ 1 gb RAM. It seems slow esecially when working with Adobe Creative Suite programs. Is this normal until the new intel programs are written.

Is it slow at everything or just at processor intensive tasks such as size changes, tone gradients and other such tasks ?
Slowness like this is hard to gauge as their isn't a good standard way of testing and benchmarking. Also as you suspected Rosetta is doing allot of the background work and sapping processor power just to imitate a PowerPC chip.
Most applications like this from Adobe should see major speed improvements when they come out with Universal.
