Slow iMovie '08 encoding times

I am running iMovie '08 on an Octo 2.8 Mac Pro and am getting some slow encoding times for the videos. I just tried to upload an 8 minute clip to YouTube and the movie encoding took about 6-8 minutes. It's an 8 minute 480x320 clip... it should be encoding in a minute tops (judging from VisualHub and HandBrake encoding speeds). QuickTime also does some really slow exporting. Is this normal behavior or am I missing some sort of setting?
