I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro. a 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo, and have never had any problems with it. Just recently I have discovered that when I plug anything into either USB port the entire machine slows to a turtles place. It doesn't respond for several minutes and can take 5-10 minutes just to open a folder on a Stick Drive. I tried a video transfer cable and got the same thing. It was unusable because the entire machine slowed down so far it couldn't keep up with the video. I have tried both ports, tried different USB devices, etc. and they all have the same problem. When I unplug it, the device will return to normal after a few minutes, but it's usually just easier to restart the machine. I have tried repairing my permissions and emptying all my cache files and it didn't make any difference.

Any suggestions?
