Guys I'm stumped on why this open directory server is running so slowly. Its very inconsistent if its slow or not which makes it harder to diagnose. Sometimes clients are slow when connecting and sometimes they are not. It also can connect to google very easily but has trouble with speedtest.net(I've tried manually inputting the openDNS servers and that did not help). Also the youtube pages will load instantly except the videos won't ever load.
There is one client that is not able to connect the to open directory at all because it is not able to log on. I'll call it the bad egg. We thought that the switch might be slowing down because the bad egg was having a bad connection. But unplugging the bad egg did not work. We think the problem lies on the open directory in combination with the bad egg having a bad ethernet cable. I know that my computer has always been fine connecting to the open directory and the internet so we took another ethernet cable and connected it to the port where my computer was connected. The results were that the bad egg performed perfectly as if it were my computer. When we connected the open directory is still performed slowly and can't even open speedtest.net.
So I assumed that the NIC on the OD was malfunctioning but since mac pro's have onboard I switched the hard drive with my computer. I pulled out the open directory and put my HDD in it and connected it as it were my computer and it was faster than ever so I assumed that it had to be HDD problems of the open directory. But when I connected my Mac pro with the OD HDD that proved me wrong again because it was fine. So do you have any other ideas. I've also tried plugging my computer into all the ports where the OD and the bad egg mac were connected and I was able to connect fine(using my ethernet cable, not the same on as the bad egg, so I think this proved that the bad egg is because of an eth cable).
