I've just bought a 20" iMac and after switching it on I start the Software Update. I'm currently downloaded the OS X update (10.4.6) which is 191 MB. Currently, it's going to take three hours to download! On a 2mb connection, this is quite slow. All other downloads seem to run at a decent speed.

I was just wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem? Perhaps I need to forward some port on my router?

You should not have to do this. Most likely it's a slow server. Cancel it and try it again tomorrow....or else just let it go in the background.

I figured as much, I just wondered if it was a common problem.

People occasionally complain about it sometimes on the day immediately following a slew of update releases. To be honest, it's not common to the point that it will prevent you from getting updates. I've never had any serious trouble. But I'm also in the habit of waiting a few days after most updates become available to run them.
