Slow Spaces animations... Expose and Dock are normal and fluid?

So I upgraded from 10.5.8 and everything went smoothly... however the transition from Space to Space is very choppy compared to Leopard. Expose works great as do the Dock animations -- even Shift + Minimize looks fine. So the problem appears to be isolated to Spaces.

I would really hate to do a clean install -- any ideas, solutions, recommendations? :cool:
