Slow to no notification for emails on watch

I have noticed when I am not home on my wifi network I get slow or sometimes no email notification on my Apple watch. I am not sure if I have missed something in set up of watch that is causing this ? This happens sometimes when using my iPad or if my iPhone is open or even if my iPhone is in my pocket. Maybe someone can help.

If your iPhone is unlocked and screen is on, the watch gets no notifications.
