Slowwww printing with Adobe Illustrator 9.0

Greetings

I'm a newbie to AI 9.0 and compared to Appleworks 6 it takes forever to spool and print ... even with relatively simple text documents. Our present "fix" is to drag text files to Photoshop and print them there. What's up with that ? I'd imagined that AI would be great for creating/printing logos, business cards, order forms, etc ... but so far we can't figure out the slow printing snafu.

Any ideas ?
