So I was just looking at the dust on my Macbook Pro Retina 15" [Early 2013] with my torch when I happened to notice, what looks like a small sensor/camera in the hinge, has anyone any idea what its for?
(Right hand side of hinge, kind of inline with the F12/power button)

It's a little hard to tell from this image, but if you try it yourself (point your iPhone torch at it, and it kind of reflects like a camera lens in a way).

Any ideas?

Probably light sensor (won't let you turn keyboard backlight on when it's too bright outside, you can cover it by hand).

I don't think so - the webcam acts as the light sensor. I tried covering it/shining light at it and it's had no affect on either screen brightness or key backlight?

That little spec is missing from my Late 2013 15" rMBP

It's a stain.

Use the black/gray microfiber cloth that was included with the rMBP to wipe it off. Add a tiny bit of water to the cloth if needed.
