I thought I remember seeing a setting where you could enable or disable the smart cover putting the iPad to sleep when the flap is closed...

Where is this setting located? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

General > iPad cover lock / unlock

Do you have to have the smart cover attached to activate the setting?

Because I do not have that option anywhere in my general settings page. I don't have a smart cover either though.

Good question. I took it off and the setting was there. Perhaps it activates after the smart cover is attached for the first time?

Yep. If you don't have a Smart Cover, you can simulate it by holding a fridge magnet or similar close to the right edge about 3/4 up when holding the device in portrait mode. This makes the screen turn off. After that, the setting appears.
