Smart folders acting up with external drive

About a week ago I decided that I wanted to reorganize my external drive using smart folders. I clicked file>new smart folder. It only gave me 3 location options: This Mac, my home folder, and Shared. I clicked shared. Now, none of the search parameters come up with anything. No matter what I type in, it the smart folder doesn't think it exists. Any help?
