Okay, so I've had to restore a user account from backup, and upon opening Mail it performed an import which was successful except that now my smart mailboxes are all broken.
There's nothing wrong with the conditions themselves; in fact I can create new smart mailboxes that should match everything and they're simply not working, as no messages are displayed at all.
I've already tried rebuilding all the mailboxes (though the import should have done this already), I've also tried deleting all the various caches and relaunching Mail (caches such as the envelope indexes under ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData and the message cache under ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail) but none of this has helped. No matter what I do the smart mailboxes are simply non-functional.
Does anyone know anything else I can try? How are the smart mailboxes implemented? I've already tried re-indexing the volume in Spotlight in case it uses that to perform the matching, but it doesn't appear to have helped either.
