I understand that a smart plug won’t work for a tv that automatically turns off after a certain amount of time, but theoretically if I turn off the auto power off feature, would the smart plug be able to turn on and off the tv? We have an older Visio that automatically turns off after 10 minutes of no signal detected (from cable or Apple TV) but we can turn off the auto power off feature. Sorry for being a complete HomeKit noob lol.

Most TVs won't power on when power is restored. To test, turn your TV on, then unplug it. Wait 10 seconds, plug it back in. Does it turn on by itself?

If not, then a smart plug won't work to turn the TV on. There are other solutions like a standalone IR blaster or a Harmony hub but I've never been able to get either of those to play well with Homekit out of the box. Usually more hurdles are necessary, such as Homebridge.
