Hi,

I discovered the very useful (and acurate) Tool SMART-UTILITY. http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php (look at the screen shots to understand, why I like this programm so much). Unfortunately after 5 times of using it costs something.
(I tried SMART Reporter and checked the same disk with SMART UTILITY, SMART Reporter said in good health and did not detect the defective sectors S.U. had found).

So I wanted to try this one:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/smartmontools/wiki/Download

It seems one has to put together his/her own package and install two components to use it and one has to know what to type in the terminal.

CAN SOMEONE walk me through installation and advice me how to use it?

Thank you!

PS: macupdate.com suggests this one http://sixtyfive.xmghosting.com/products/smartctl/ which I installed a while ago, but simply clicking on the symbol causes the programm to be shown in the Finder-bar, but I can cause no action.

I looked at the one on sourcefourge; it gives instructions for how to do it, but the instructions assume you are comfortable with *NIX command line and programming. Are you familiar with that?

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about this stuff.

The only thing I know is ,that one can type words and signs in the terminal window and the Computer does something.

You may be out of luck as far as trying to compile and build something is concerned. I worked with *NIX for quite a few years and the steps they show at sourceforge make sense to me, but I can't picture trying to walk someone through.
