So I dropped my old white macbook down the stairs and the LCD is totally smashed and looks like an ink pen threw up on it. Trying to hook it up via HDMI lead so I can use it via my TV ( I have an assignment due on Monday) but all I get is the galaxy background. How on earth can do I get it to work? Any tips would be most appreciated!

If it's really important I'd remove the harddrive and hook it up to another laptop/computer to get your work. Long shot but worth a try if you are desperate.

Looks like it try's to extend the screen instead of mirroring. Did you try to close it with HDMI attached? It should stay on and show your desktop on the TV
