SMB sharing still screwed up in Mavericks?

I am trying to stream some stuff through SMB from my iMac over to a Raspberry Pi and it jsnt working for me. I keep getting Operation not permitted. Is it still broken where I've got to download a third party software like SMBUp?

It's really frustrating thought it was going to be fixed.
