I'm following the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 but after I turn the computer on I don't see any change/hear any sounds/etc. Is there any way to tell if the reset was successful? I did a PRAM and there was an audible confirmation, so I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong.

SMC reset does not make any sounds at restart. I am not aware of a way to tell if it worked. If you did the KB combo with the machine shut down it should work though.

One way to tell is if your magsafe light changes briefly from orange to green and back to orange again after you perform the procedure. For this to work though your laptop needs to be charging and not at 100% charge.

Another indicator is to look into system logs. You will see something along the lines of 'DSMOS arrived/received'.

DSMOS = Don't Steal Mac OS.... some of the core system binaries (Dock, etc) are encrypted and won't run without DSMOS decrypting them.

If DSMOS didn't start, neither would your Mac. :)

I stand corrected.
