SMS 6-digit code autofill not working anymore... what am I doing wrong?

now when I get a 6-digit code, I do see it above the number pad, but when I click on the 6-digit code, it goes away and does not get pasted into the box...

I've searched online and tried all the usual fixes... none worked.... also tried restarting the phone a few times. I don't know if it was caused by iOS 14.6, which I just updated yesterday. Prior to yesterday, it was working just fine. :(
