SMS and AT&T Issue Question

Hello,

New to posting, so please forgive if this answer can be found somewhere else.

I have AT&T iphone 3GS and when I go to concerts, festivals, and sporting events, I cannot send and receive TEXTS. It just sits there forever trying to send, the says message failure. As you can imagine, this is aggravating as my girlfriend's phone (not iphone) sends and receives texts with no trouble.

I can make phone calls, but the SMS app does not work. WTF?

Here is the big question, will a VERIZON iphone rectify this situation? OR will the new iphones (4s) solve this annoying issue?

Any help to these questions is appreciated. Thanks.

To clarify, is this an issue when they are large groups of people around, i.e., concerts and sporting events? And does this issue effect the VERIZON iphone as well?
