SMS and iMessage creating two conversations from the same contact?

When I text someone through iMessage while on wifi, then leave wifi and text through SMS, it creates two separate conversations with the same contact. Is this intended?

I currently have it going with 4 friends and it's taking up a bunch of real estate on my screen. I always thought that if I was texting someone, it would be blue for iMessage and green for SMS in the same conversation window but right now I have two conversations, one of solely iMessage and one of SMS.
 
Are iMessages sent to the phone numbers (rather than email)? Are you sending from the same conversation or a separate one for some reason?
