For at least a month now, I've run into the issue where I receive SMS messages on my phone, mark them read, etc. I then open up my MacBook, and they pop up as unread, and I need to mark them read once again. This happened on Catalina and also now happens on Big Sur.

I do have iCloud Messages turned on, and also have the phone sent to forward messages to other devices, including the Mac. Previously, though, the messages would appear on the Mac but be marked as read, in sync with the phone.

Does anyone have ideas as to how to fix this and keep the unread/read statuses in sync? Thank you!

This is happening to me as well along with several other strange behaviors.

1. read status will not sync at all across any devices
2. I will get phone calls on my mac book pro that don't appear on my phone. There is no way to answer the call on my phone or transfer the call to my phone. Happens infrequently
3. Sound notifications seems to be random across my devices. If I am in my room with my cell phone in my hand I will hear a notification in my office. There is no notification on my phone but if I open my phone there is an unread message. Happens randomly

Did you find any solution? The sign out of everything and then resign in worked after upgrading to BigSur but it duplicated everything and I spent a while removing duplicates so I'm not doing that again.

Same thing. '17 15" MBP, iP12P, 10.5" iPP, Big Sur and 14.4.2 so everything up to date, all on same icloud account, yet reading an SMS on any device only updates status on that single device but iMessage syncs just fine.

This is the way it has been working for me even way back with Mojave and below. As long as my iPhone is set to forward messages to other devices, that happens.

Actually I prefer it that way especially with SMS which do not always sync properly.
