SMS messages showing up as numbers in Messages in Yosemiti

Hello, running Yosemite on a MacBook air (early 2014 model) and iOS 8.1 on an iPhone 5. I have turned on SMS forwarding and am able to send and receive SMS messages from the Messages app on my laptop. However, incoming messages register with my contacts while outgoing messages must be sent from another tab which just shows the recipients phone number. I have rebooted both devices several times but this doesn't seem to have any impact.

Any advice?

SOLVED: the issue i was having was that my language was set to English UK so the numbers weren't formatted correctly.
